With the official unemployment rate above 9% and many other people underemployed, more and more individuals are looking to start their own businesses. One option that people may want to consider is to become a Real Estate Agent.   After reading the past sentence I can imagine what you must be saying: “Are you crazy? The housing market is down, foreclosures are up and you are suggesting that being a Real Estate Agent is an employment opportunity?” That is exactly what I am saying! Think about it this way. The housing market may be down and some analysts project that the market has not “bottomed out”. But, like any market there are recessionary and growth cycles. The housing market will bounce back and will have a growth cycle.   Real Estate Agents who position themselves to be a part of that growth cycle will have a good chance to reap professional and financials benefits from the upswing in the housing market. When will this happen? Your guess is as good as mine! But, be assured, it will happen. Therefore, now is the time to plan and develop your real estate career. If you wait until the housing market turns around to start you real estate career, you will be too late! Now, during the “down cycle” is the time to be proactive and to position yourself for a rewarding career as a Real Estate Agent.

Having been a very successful Real Estate Agent for Re/Max for the past 25 years, and having served as a Real Estate Coach, I have developed strategies that have enabled me to have a rewarding career. Even in today’s poor housing market, I continue to sell homes and enjoy the many benefits of being my own boss while providing customers the opportunity to live the American Dream of owning their own home. In my series So You Want to be a Real Estate Agent, I will explore, examine and emphasize the many intricacies and nuances that help to define a successful real estate professional. In this journey, I will also add many humorous, outlandish, and out and out crazy stories that only a Realtor can appreciate. It is hoped that this series of essays will encourage you to become a Real Estate Agent, will provide information that will help you to get started in your new career, and to enjoy the many benefits of being your own boss in today’s employment world of corporate downsizing, repositioning and, ultimately, lay-offs. You will have questions and or comments, so please feel free to contact me. Perhaps one of your questions and comments will be the source for a monthly essay!
